# A new note editor: no toolbar, still Markdown

Writing a note in Hjarni used to mean looking at Markdown. Pound signs, asterisks, square brackets, and a row of toolbar buttons above them.

Now a note looks like the note while you write it.

**Headings look like headings.** Bold is bold, tasks are boxes you can tick, tables are tables, images show inline and a link to another note is a chip. The Markdown only shows on the line your cursor is on, so you can still see and edit exactly what is there.

**Select text for a formatting bar.** Bold, italic, strikethrough, code, a link, a link to another note, or Turn into a heading, list or quote.

**Type / for everything else.** At the start of a line, / opens a menu: headings, lists, tasks, quote, code block, table, divider, link a note, add a tag, an image, or today's date. Keep typing to filter it.

**Type [[ to link a note.** Search your notes as you type and pick one. It shows up as a chip, and Ctrl or Cmd click opens it.

**Tables you can type in.** Tab moves to the next cell, and a small bar adds and removes rows and columns.

**Images you can resize.** Drag the corner of an image to set its width.

**Shortcuts you'd expect.** Ctrl or Cmd + Enter ticks a task, Alt + Up or Down moves a line, Enter continues a list, `[] ` starts a task, and pasting a web address over selected words links them. Paste from a web page or Google Docs and the formatting comes along as Markdown.

**On your phone,** a row of keys sits on top of the keyboard with the / menu, formatting, lists, tasks, links, tags, images and undo. It works in the iPhone, iPad, Android and Mac apps, and in the Hjarni panel inside ChatGPT.

**Your notes stay plain Markdown.** Nothing is converted. What you type is what gets saved, what Claude and ChatGPT read and write, and what you get when you export. Your AI can keep editing the same notes you do, without the editor rewriting anything you didn't touch.
