# Import from Evernote

Evernote exports ENEX files, not Markdown. Convert them with [Yarle](https://github.com/akosbalasko/yarle/releases), a free desktop app, then upload the result as a ZIP. Your notebooks become folders and your images stay on their note.

## Steps

1. In the Evernote desktop app, right-click a notebook, choose **Export Notebook**, and pick **ENEX**. Repeat for each notebook. The web and mobile apps can't export.
2. Download [Yarle](https://github.com/akosbalasko/yarle/releases), open it, and add your `.enex` files.
3. On the **Configuration** tab, keep the target dialect on **Obsidian**, and set **Convert webclips** to **Yes**. Yarle skips web clips by default, so without it every clipped article is left out.
4. Pick an output folder and convert.
5. Open the `notes` folder Yarle created, select everything inside it, and zip it.
6. Go to **Import** from your Personal page, or visit [/import/new](https://hjarni.com/import/new), and upload the ZIP. It runs in the background, so you can close the tab.

Zip what is inside the `notes` folder, not the folder itself. Otherwise every notebook lands inside an extra folder called `notes`.

## What comes across

Notebooks

Each notebook becomes a folder.

Notes

Titles and formatting come across as Markdown. Yarle also writes the title as a heading at the top of each note.

Images and files

Attached to the note they came from. Up to 25 MB per file. On the Free plan, attachments share 20 MB across five files, and files past that are skipped.

Note links

Links between notes keep working when both notes are in the same ZIP, including links across notebooks. If two notes share a title, a link to that title goes to whichever one was imported first, so rename duplicates in Evernote before you export.

Tags and dates

Stay as text in the note, like `#recipes` and `Created at: 2024-01-01`. They don't become Hjarni tags.

Common questions

## FAQ

**Why not upload the ENEX file directly?**

Hjarni imports Markdown, and ENEX is Evernote's own XML format. Yarle converts it to Markdown on your computer, so nothing leaves your machine until you upload the ZIP.

**Do I have to export each notebook separately?**

Yes. Evernote exports one notebook at a time, from the desktop app only. Add all the .enex files to Yarle at once and they convert together.

**Do my Evernote tags become Hjarni tags?**

No. Yarle writes them into the note as text, like #recipes. You can ask your assistant to turn them into Hjarni tags after the import.

**I'm on the Free plan. What happens if I have more notes than my limit?**

We save your upload and send you to checkout. After you upgrade, the import runs. The same rule applies to any import, see [Import from Obsidian or Markdown](https://hjarni.com/docs/import).

**Can I import the same export twice?**

Yes, but you'll get duplicates. Delete the notes from the first import before running it again.
