Terms of Service
Last updated: March 23, 2026
Agreement
By creating an account or using Hjarni, you agree to these terms and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the service.
What Hjarni provides
Hjarni is a personal knowledge management service. You can create notes, organize them into containers, tag them, attach files, and connect AI assistants via the MCP protocol or API. We offer free and paid plans as described on our pricing page.
Your account
- You must provide a valid email address to create an account.
- You are responsible for keeping your password and access tokens secure.
- You are responsible for all activity under your account, including actions taken by AI assistants you connect.
- You must be at least 16 years old to use Hjarni.
Your content
You own everything you create in Hjarni. We do not claim any intellectual property rights over your notes, files, or other content. We only access your content to provide the service to you and to AI assistants you explicitly connect.
You can export your data at any time in a machine-readable format (JSON). If you delete your account, all your data is permanently removed.
MCP and API access
Hjarni provides an MCP server and REST API so AI assistants and other tools can interact with your notes on your behalf. When you connect an AI assistant:
- You authorize it to read, create, update, delete, and organize your notes using your access token.
- You can revoke access at any time by deleting the token.
- The AI assistant's provider processes data according to their own terms and privacy policy. Hjarni is not responsible for how third-party AI providers handle your data once it leaves our servers.
Teams and collaboration
- Team owners are responsible for managing members and billing for their team.
- Team members can access shared team notes and containers as permitted by the team owner.
- Container sharing allows other users to read and edit notes in your shared containers. You retain ownership and can revoke access at any time.
Paid plans and billing
- Paid subscriptions are billed monthly or annually through Stripe.
- You can cancel your subscription at any time. You retain access to paid features until the end of your current billing period.
- Refunds are handled on a case-by-case basis. Contact us if you believe a charge was made in error.
Free plan limits
The free plan includes up to 25 notes. If you exceed this limit, you will need to upgrade to a paid plan to create new notes. If you downgrade from a paid plan, existing notes remain readable, editable, and exportable — you simply cannot create new notes until you are within the free plan limit.
Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use Hjarni for any unlawful purpose.
- Attempt to gain unauthorized access to other users' accounts or data.
- Abuse the API or MCP endpoints in a way that degrades the service for others (rate limits are enforced).
- Resell or redistribute access to the service without permission.
- Use automated means to scrape or bulk-extract data from other users' shared content.
We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms. If we terminate your account, we will notify you by email and provide at least 14 days to export your data before permanent deletion, unless the violation requires immediate action (e.g., illegal activity or active harm to other users).
Service availability
We aim to keep Hjarni available at all times but do not guarantee uninterrupted service. We may perform maintenance or updates that temporarily affect availability. We are not liable for any loss resulting from service interruptions.
Limitation of liability
Hjarni is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind. To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the service. Our total liability is limited to the amount you have paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim. Nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights as a consumer under EU law.
Governing law
These terms are governed by Belgian law. Any disputes will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Belgium.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. When we make significant changes, we will notify you by email and/or by displaying a notice in the app before the changes take effect. Continued use of Hjarni after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
