Export and data ownership
You own your notes. Hjarni stores them in Markdown, and you can export everything at any time. No lock-in, no proprietary formats.
Data ownership philosophy
Your notes are yours. Hjarni organizes them. It doesn't lock them away.
Notes are stored as Markdown. Plain text that works in any editor, any AI model, any other tool. If you leave, your data comes with you. No hoops, no waiting period, no degraded export.
How to export
- Go to your containers page.
- Click Export all to download your entire knowledge base, or export individual containers.
- You'll receive a ZIP file containing your notes as Markdown files, organized in folders matching your container structure.
Team admins can export team knowledge bases separately.
What gets exported
Every note as a .md file with full Markdown content.
Container hierarchy preserved as nested directories.
File attachments included alongside their notes.
Tags are included as metadata in the exported files.
You can export your full personal brain, an individual container, or a team knowledge base separately.
The export format is a ZIP of Markdown files and attachments. It is meant to stay readable and useful outside Hjarni.
